Many people believe that Natural, African hair is hard to manage and for many decades, even centuries Africans all over the world with a tight curl pattern have made the choice to chemically straighten or "relax" their hair. It's fairly recent that the ideology about African hair is changing and we are learning to embrace our hair the way it grows out of our head.

SO, HOW DO YOU TURN COARSE, COMB BREAKING HAIR INTO SOFT, MANAGEABLE HAIR?

The trick is to condition the hair, making sure that the hair is always well moisturized. This will help to soften the hair and make it more manageable. The Founder and leading Trichologist of African Naturalistas suggests doing a deep conditioning treatment every week. Deep conditioning treatments like our own Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise, are made of natural ingredients that enter the hair shaft to condition the coily/curly hair. When used consistently, the hair will retain moisture and maintain this state of manageability.

LOW POROSITY VS. HIGH POROSITY

I'm sure you've been hearing these buzzwords all over the internet, High Porosity and Low Porosity, but what do they mean? Well, porosity talks about how porous the hair is. High porosity means that there are more "holes" in the hair shaft to allow water and products to enter. So if you pour water on your hair and your hair automatically get soaked, then you have high porosity hair. If your hair seems to repel water because there are no "holes' in the hair shaft so it is harder for water and other products to enter, then you have low porosity hair. Knowing the porosity level of your hair will mean the way you condition your hair will be different. Those with low porosity hair should use heat while deep conditioning their hair. This will help the product enter the hair shaft and get the soft, manageable texture you desire. This is where many having been getting it wrong over the years.
