While it may be possible that your wig may be damaging your hair. It's also possible that it is not damaging your hair. These days, wigs have come a long way from the wigs of our great-grandmother. Today, the styles, colors, textures, densities and everything in between are so vast, you can easily look like the baddie that you are. There are so many conflicting ideas as to whether wigs are good for your hair or bad for your hair with great points on each side. So today we will discuss these points and you can decide for you if wearing a wig is good for you or bad for you. So let's take a look at when wigs are bad for your hair.
When Wigs Are Damaging Your Hair
Your wig is damaging your hair if you are showing signs of Traction Alopecia.
Traction Alopecia is formed when there is constant pulling at your hair by the roots. Oftentimes you will see little white bulbs attached to the hair as it comes out. When you are seeing evidence of Traction Alopecia, you should discontinue the use of wigs immediately. To continue using the wig in this state, is going to exacerbate the problem and you will eventually see bald spots forming, usually at the hairline or nape of the hair.
Your wig is damaging your hair if you wear your wigs everyday and do not care for your hair underneath.
If you wake up everyday, get dressed, put on your hair and your makeup, go to work, come back home, remove the wig, eat and sleep, the braids under your wig are dry and old and you've not moisturized or washed your hair in over a month, then the wig is bad for you because you are being lazy about your haircare. Your hair still needs to be washed, conditioned and moisturized on a regular basis and if wearing wigs is preventing you from doing so, then wearing wigs is bad for your hair.
Your wig is damaging your hair if you are not also wearing a layer of protection between your hair and the cap of the wig.
Without wearing a wig cap, preferably a satin lined wig cap under your wig, the wig is likely to constantly rub against the hair shaft. This friction will weaken the hair shaft and very soon you will see excess breakage of your hair. You will notice that most of the breakage will take part at the crown of your head and at the front. That is where the lace of the lace front wigs are causing the most damage.
Your wig is damaging your hair if you are trying to recover from traumatic hair loss.
Whether it be a form of Alopecia or breakage, if you have finally decided to start a hair recovery program to help you regrow and restore your hair, then wigs are bad for your hair. It will be impossible for you to recover your hair while still wearing wigs because the wigs will be a source of friction for your hair and scalp. You really need to allow your hair to rest during this period.
When are wigs good for your hair?
There are those who choose to wear wigs to avoid putting heat or chemicals on their own hair so they use the wig to get their desired look. As discussed in our previous blog post, we shared that the extended use of heat and chemicals causes your hair to become weak and break, so if you opt to use these harmful processes on a wig, you are protecting your natural hair from the damage. Wigs can be a healthy part of your hair routine if they are worn periodically with a wig cap and you are still taking diligent steps to ensure that your hair is washed, conditioned and moisturized on a regular basis.
